Domestic Violence and Family Services

Domestic Violence and Family Services

The Domestic Violence Department is located on the Absentee Shawnee Tribal complex in Shawnee, OK. We provide confidential services to Native and Non-Native victims/survivors of Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault, Stalking, and Dating Violence within Pottawatomie, Cleveland, and Oklahoma Counties, and Absentee Shawnee Tribal Members across the nation. Our advocates can meet at a safe, public location if necessary. We also collaborate with the Pottawatomie County Family Justice Center, One Safe Place and have meeting space available. If you would like to meet at that location, please let the advocate know when you speak with them.

Indian Child Welfare

Absentee Shawnee Tribe ICW Program Vision Statement

"To emphasize the social, economic, health, and cultural needs of the Absentee Shawnee Tribal families while advocating for continuous improvement in overall quality of life within our community, the Absentee Shawnee Tribe of Oklahoma. The ICW office seeks to ensure the preservation of our families, to guarantee the safety and protection of our children to provide advocacy for members in need, to provide for the unexpected special needs of families and youth at risk and to offer support, information, referral, crisis assistance, and services to families who need remedial or rehabilitative services, court supervision or protective services."
In 1978, Congress passed the Indian Child Welfare Act (ICWA), 25 USC 1901 et seq., which provides a legal basis for protection and services for Indian families and children. The ICWA establishes provisions for the placement of such children.
